Getting crafty just in time for some cute summer solstice decorations which also add a little color to any gals room!

1. First, you’ll need a pair of chopsticks and some yarn. We used a multicolored ball of yarn which gave our final design a cool pattern! You can also choose to alternate between different colors of yarn.

2. Tie your chopsticks together by knotting a small strand of yarn around their center.

3. Snip the excess yarn from the knot.

4. Cross the chopsticks to create an “X” shape.

5. Hold the center of the cross and with the beginning end of the yarn, wrap around the top of your first chopstick.

6. Continue to wrap the yarn around each chopstick in an under-over motion.

7. You should start to see a diamond pattern form as your god’s eye progresses.

8. When you have almost reached the end of your chopsticks, tie a single knot at the top of one of the sticks and leave yourself extra thread for hanging.

9. Good job! Now you have your very own decoration for celebrating summer! Once you’re a pro, try adding beads or feathers to your designs!

Until next time,

Queenies xoxo

Summer is pretty much here!!!!!! There is so much to be excited about, including some really really hot summer shows coming to Calgary. Every year I look forward to seeing which of my fav bands will visit Calgary on their summer tours. Here is a little preview of some of the upcoming shows I’m most excited about in the next couple weeks!

May 22 and 23 – Bon Iver at Mac Hall Ballroom – I hope he sings Calgary!! The show is sold out, but there is tons of people selling tickets on kijiji!

May 23 – Zeus with Wake! Owl at Broken City – This show would be worth seeing just for the openers, Wake! Owl. They are the most adorable boys with guitars! Check out their single called Wild Country. (http://vimeo.com/28395328)

June 1 – Deer Tick at The Gateway

June 5 – Wintersleep at Hifi

June 6 – Brasstronaut : check them out at Communitea Cafe in Canmore. Make an evening out of it and drive to the mountains to see these guys in a low-key cozy venue in the mountains!

June 9 – Jon and Roy at the Palomino

…and then its almost SLED ISLAND! woohoooo! But that’s a whole other story!

Get out there and groove to some live music to kick off your summer!

Who would have thought that a chic, sophisticated, polished hairstyle could be created using a sock! Here’s our tutorial on how to achieve this oh-so coveted look!

First things first! You will need to find a lonely sock and cut the foot portion off. The sock itself doesn’t need to be perfect for it wont be seen once its nicely secured in your hair!

1. Pull hair back into a nice high ponytail. We used a brush to make sure there would be no fly-aways!

2. Bring the doughnut-ed sock to the tip of the ponytail, and tip your head forward. This will make it easier to roll the sock up your hair.

3. Begin to wrap hair into the sock and continue to fold down toward the ponytail’s elastic.

4. Once all the hair has been tucked into the sock, secure any loose pieces.

5.  Use bobby-pins if you feel the need to secure the bun further, add a touch of hairspray and voila! A cute and stylish up-do in minutes.

Since nail art and decals are all the rage right now, and a personal obsession of mine, what better product to test out than the new OPI “Pure Lacquer” Nail Apps.($13) Here are my step by step instructions and what I thought of the product overall…

1. Start with clean, dry nails.

2. Choose a strip that corresponds with the size of the nail you are working on. I found bigger was better in terms of choosing a size for each nail. Peel off the clear film covering the strip

3. Gently stretch the strip across your nail, smoothing out any creases. Don’t worry if there’s some overlap on the sides, you can file it away later.

4. Pull the strip down over the top of your nail and bend it at a slight angle.

5. Use a nail file to remove the excess strip at the top of your nail.

6. Go over each nail, removing any excess around the sides or bottom of the nail using a toothpick.

7. Finish your DIY manicure to reveal perfectly finished nails!

Total buy! Although OPI doesn’t include necessary items, such as the file or toothpick I found it to be an easy and worthwhile product to use. It only took me about ten minutes to complete both hands, and no waiting for dry time. For an inexpensive product, the finished result gave my nails an updated and polished look!

Serendipity alive and well in Kensington by Patrick Brooks

”Serendipity is my philosophy in finding topics for this Queen blog. I usually let the blueprint of life determine what random Queen event happens to enter my field of view at any given moment…

…I recently became Facebook friends with another student of mine and I happened to notice that she listed her employer as being ‘Queen Boutique.” Not a big surprise, I suppose, since we in Canada frequently capitalize on our royalty-laden British heritage as a convenient platform for commercial purposes. Even so, I clicked on it to see for myself whether “Queen Boutique” actually embodied the band’s motif in some way…”
